Player contributions

Contribution measures assign value to performances in completed matches. The initial candidate is ball-level batting and bowling value that accounts for runs, wickets, and the state of the innings. Win probability added will provide a separate account of how much events changed a team’s chances in their actual match context.

Validated contribution estimates are not yet available. The exploratory WAR results use assumptions that still require calibration. They are not current rankings.

WAR requires both a replacement baseline and a defensible conversion to expected wins. An average player is not necessarily a replacement player. The baseline must reflect an available substitute appropriate to the role and competition.

Season and career totals will be accompanied by an explicitly defined rate measure and exposure. Different units, such as runs above replacement and win probability added, will remain separate. Batting, bowling, and fielding credit cannot simply be added if their attribution rules count the same event twice.

Detailed fielding opportunities are not available in the current data. Any total player measure must disclose what fielding contribution it can and cannot capture.
